Moira's European Trip October 2015 Greetings from Vancouver – we enjoyed a particularly sunny, dry summer this year, which prompted severe watering restrictions in the rainforest! But it is November now and the reservoirs are being replenished, and some of the ski hills have opened early - hoping to make up for the dearth of snow last season. |

Moira’s travels in late September took her back to Spain, Portugal, France and Italy – visiting some Relais & Chateaux properties north of Madrid, near Toledo, at the Algarve, on the island of Madeira in Portugal, in Tuscany, Rome and a Small Luxury Hotel in the south of France. Besides the properties, she also visited a number of impressive art exhibitions and collections, plus beautiful, well-preserved Roman ruins and historic sites. The regional cuisine, a highlight of her travels, featured the 2-Michelin star restaurant at Atrio Restaurante Hotel in Extremadura, Spain, and the flavors of the south of France, Tuscany and Rome. As you can well imagine a few glasses of exceptional wine were consumed along the way! |

Moira’s late September trip took her to 5 European countries to visit new and exciting hotel properties in France, Italy, Northern Spain and Portugal. The experience was rich in culture and history, showcasing the food trends of these areas along with the different wine making methods. From Paris to the south of France, a tour around the Tuscan countryside and an amazing trip following the route of the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James), where many Pilgrims have journeyed for centuries to the final destination of Santiago de Compostela. The last few days of the trip were spent along the Douro Valley in Portugal, some of the most dramatic vineyards in the world. |

In May 2012, Moira had the opportunity of visiting 7 Relais & Chateaux properties in the south eastern region and the Baleric Islands. Starting in the cultural and business center of Madrid, Moira then travelled to the Valencia Community, famous for its oranges, also offers more than 500 kilometers of coast with plenty of sun and sand for tourists. The Baleric islands in the Mediterranean include Mallorca, the largest of the four main islands, and Ibiza. An ideal climate with some 300 days of sun per year, wonderful beaches, a rich culture and warm hospitality make these islands one of the preferred holiday destinations in Spain. |
|
Spain & Portugal - Sept & Oct 2011 Moira’s introduction to thirteen Relais & Chateaux properties in Spain and Portugal started in Barcelona and took her north to the Pyrenees to visit two amazing hotels in the mountains. It was Moira’s first trip to Madrid, one of the hidden treasures of Europe. A day at the Prado Museum, with its astonishing collection of Velázquez & Goya, should be added to everyone’s bucket list. Heading north to Pamplona, famous for the running of the bulls, Moira was delighted to visit two of Frank Gehry’s amazing structures: The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Marques de Riscal winery in La Rioja. This trip also included visits to the World Heritage cities of Toledo and Cáceres, and the most westerly European point in the Atlantic Ocean. |

Spain & Portugal - Way of St. James
The Camino de Santiago de Compestela (also known in English as The Way of St. James) is a network of walking and cycling pilgrimage paths that start in Spain and other parts of Europe and converge on Santiago de Compestela, where tradition has it that the remains of the apostle Saint James are buried. For more than 1000 years pilgrims have traveled along these caminos. We suggest a unique experience, enjoying the hospitality and cuisine of Relais & Chateaux, while visiting historic buildings surrounded by art, culture and traditions. |
